Jason Isbell covers John Prine’s “Memories” on the tribute album Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs Of John Prine, Vol 2
According to Stereo eraser, Jason Isbell released a cover of “Memories” by the late John Prine on his tribute album, Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine, Vol 2. In addition to “Souvenirs”, the album includes covers such as “Paradise” by Sturgill Simpson, “I Remember Everything” by Brandi Carlile and “Yes I Guess They Oughta Name A Drink After You” by Tyler Childers.
Isbell’s cover of Prine’s song is just as charismatic and fluid as it does the song justice. Speeding up the tempo and changing the key, Isbell puts his own twist on the late artist’s classic. Isbell’s take sounds slightly more country, while Prine’s version sounds slightly more folk. Both songs almost exclusively use the guitar as instrumentation to complement their vocals, although Isbell introduces a drum beat that makes the song more upbeat and cheerful. Overall, Isbell’s cover is refreshing and enjoyable to listen to.
Recently Jason Isbell announced a cover album titled Georgia Blue, devoted to how the state of Georgia helped win the 2020 presidential election. The album will feature contributions from Julien Baker, Brandi Carlile and others when it is released on October 15. Isbell also recently released his cover of the REM song “Driver 8”, which he played live last month.
